Why Online Guitar Lessons Don't Have to Mean Learning Alone
Learning guitar online can become frustrating when you’re left to figure everything out yourself. You can watch endless YouTube tutorials, buy courses, and practice without knowing whether you’re working on the right things.
🤯 Information overload — There is always something new to learn online. Without an organized path, it’s easy to jump from one guitar lesson to another without actually developing usable skills.
🤝🏼 No accountability — Learning on your own gives you flexibility, but it also means nobody is expecting you to practice or helping you stay on track.
🔄 No feedback — When nobody is watching you play, it’s difficult to know whether your technique is inefficient, whether you misunderstood something, or whether what you’re practicing is actually helping you improve.
The problem isn’t learning guitar online. The problem is learning alone. Effective learning requires organization, accountability, and feedback.
That’s different from our online guitar lessons — Our online guitar classroom combines the flexibility of learning from home with live instruction, structured lessons, accountability, and feedback. You aren’t simply watching guitar videos and trying to figure things out yourself.
Who Can Take Online Guitar Lessons in New York
1. Online Guitar Lessons for Students Across New York
Our online guitar classroom gives students throughout New York access to the same instructors and curriculum used in our Upstate New York guitar schools. Students can join from Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, Ithaca, Binghamton, New York City, Long Island, Westchester, the Hudson Valley, the Capital Region, the Finger Lakes, and anywhere else in New York State.
Lessons for students outside our physical service area take place online. In-person classroom access is currently available only through our Upstate New York locations in Rochester, Buffalo, and Greece.
2. Beginner Online Guitar Lessons in New York
Beginners taking online guitar lessons in New York need more than information. They need guidance on how to move around the neck, play chords and song parts smoothly, and develop good practice habits from the beginning.
The newer you are to guitar, the more important feedback becomes because it can be difficult to tell on your own whether you’re practicing something correctly. Our live online classroom gives beginners the opportunity to get that feedback while following an organized curriculum.
YouTube tutorials and online guitar courses can be useful supplementary material, especially once you have enough experience to understand what you’re looking at and how to apply it. When you’re brand new, however, having a teacher guide your progress can make it easier to know what to work on and what needs to change when something isn’t working.
3. Online Guitar Lessons for Adults and Older Teens
We primarily focus on adults and older teens who are able to stay focused on what they’re working on without needing constant one-on-one attention. Our small-group online format gives students individual feedback while also giving them time to work independently, practice, and apply what they’ve just learned.
We believe younger children are generally better suited to in-person guitar lessons, where a teacher can provide the constant interaction and engagement that younger students often need.
What Makes Our Online Guitar Lessons Different
Flexible Schedule
We use a gym model for guitar lessons at the School of Guitar. This gives people with busy schedules the flexibility they need to take online guitar lessons while maintaining regular practice and progress.
Tested and proven curriculum
At the School of Guitar, lessons are designed around a skillset-based curriculum that has been tested and received over 60k hours of feedback. You won’t be our guinea pig—we know how to get the result.
Choose Your Path
We will create an action plan to close the gap between where you are on the guitar and where you want to go. Whether it’s learning your favorite songs, playing lead guitar, fingerpicking, or anything else, we have you covered.
Trained Teachers
All teachers at the School of Guitar receive training to become better teachers and keep up to date with changes to the curriculum. This provides students taking online guitar lessons with a high-quality, consistent experience no matter who they learn from.
Jams and showcases
At the School of Guitar, we offer students the chance to participate in jams and our optional student showcases at no extra cost. This allows students to transition from bedroom warriors to performing musicians.

Student Reviews

The thing I like the most is the progress-based curriculum, where you "unlock" harder levels after completing easier ones. It's very interesting and encouraging to visualize my progress and improvement with the instrument: it's like grinding for better gear in a video game, except I’m actually learning something meaningful.
The schedule is also very flexible, which is incredibly helpful for busy college students like me. There are weeks when I can’t attend class, and being able to move those hours to another week makes it much easier to stay consistent.
Growing up, I believed I had no talent, discipline, or natural ability for music. Being able to play songs I never thought I could - and to understand music as more than just "funny noise sounds good" - is something I'm truly grateful to this school and the teachers.
